Juried Photography 2010: In Search of People
|
First Prize-Carrie -Polly Chandler Second Prize-Man of Khiva -Doug Going Juror Statement: For me, nothing is more challenging but more rewarding than taking photographs of people, especially strangers on the street. People resist, become angry, often do not like your camera directed at them. Trees are calmer and easier.
I applaud the entrants to Juried Photography 2010: In Search of People. They have all photographed people, whether known to them or not, in ways aggressive, kind, often interesting and in a few cases intense, honest and even haunting. In my images, as well as in judging these, I look to connect with my subject, talk to them, arrange them if necessary, collaborate. I prefer an energy between us, a flow of sorts, whether a smile, a frown or something in between. I preach to my students (and practice in my work) to get close, involved, shoot with a wide angle lens to give a context, compose well and be always aware of the light. The selections I’ve made for the show all exhibit these qualities. I would suggest avoiding the banal, the cliché, the cute, the sentimental and romantic, and easy and cheap shots. Abandon the overworked digital image, the gimmicky, and the obvious. New ground doesn’t have to be the goal, nothing is more beautiful than an honest, direct, heartfelt portrait. The winning images have the directness and beauty that I love. Many thanks to the staff of the Smithtown Township Arts Council and the Mills Pond House Gallery for inviting me to jury In Search of People. It has been my great honor. I hope you enjoy the exhibit and the fruits of many very talented individuals. Harvey Stein New York City May 2010 |
